Downtown Rehearsal at 2155 E 7th Street in Los Angeles has permanently closed. Yelp listings confirmed the closure in April 2026. The facility had operated for over 25 years after opening in 1989, and was a staple for Downtown-based musicians who needed affordable hourly lockouts without a long commute.

It's the latest in a string of closures that has been thinning out LA's rehearsal infrastructure. Bedrock.LA closed in December 2022. Swing House Studios was permanently closed by January 2026. The Record Plant shuttered in early 2026. The cumulative effect is a market with fewer options and more competition for the rooms that remain.

If you were a Downtown Rehearsal regular, here's where to go now — organized by geography and budget.

Best Alternatives by Location

If You're in Downtown / Arts District / Boyle Heights

7th Street Rehearsal is the most direct replacement in the downtown corridor. Operating out of the same general area since 1999, they offer 24/7 rehearsal rooms with secure parking — one of the few Downtown options with that combination. The facility has been around long enough to have solved most of the problems that plague short-lived studios: consistent room maintenance, reliable booking, and reasonable rates for monthly regulars.

LA Rehearsal (5327 Santa Monica Blvd, Hollywood) is technically not Downtown, but it's the closest well-maintained option on the 101 corridor. Hours run 12PM–12AM daily, they have multiple room sizes with PA and backline, and the pricing is competitive for Hollywood. The drive from the Arts District is manageable if you're heading west anyway.

If You're in Hollywood / East Hollywood

SIR Studios Hollywood is the professional-tier option in Hollywood. It's been the go-to for touring acts pre-show and for production rehearsals since before most current LA bands were formed. The rooms are large, the backline is production-quality, and the facility runs professional scheduling. Rates are on the higher end for independent bands, but if you need pro gear and reliable booking, SIR is the best option in Hollywood.

ABC Rehearsal Studios covers the budget end in Hollywood with multiple locations including Silver Lake. Monthly rates are among the most affordable in the city for what you get. See our full review of ABC.

If You're in the Valley

Mates Rehearsal Studios in North Hollywood has been a quiet workhorse for Valley-based musicians for years. Hourly rates in the $15–$25 range, multiple room sizes, and consistent equipment maintenance. Not glamorous, but reliable — which matters more for regular rehearsal than most musicians admit. Read our Mates review.

MDM Music Studios in Los Feliz is the best option at the Valley/Eastside crossover point. Good rooms, fair pricing, and a client base that tends toward serious musicians rather than weekend warriors. See the MDM review.

If You're on the Westside

The Westside lost its largest rehearsal hub when Bedrock.LA closed in 2022. The gap has never been fully filled, which is part of what makes The Recording Club in Santa Monica the most interesting option for Westside musicians right now.

The Recording Club is a members-only music facility with five rehearsal rooms, professional backline, and 24/7 access on a monthly membership. The model is different from a traditional hourly rehearsal space — you pay flat per month rather than per session — but for any musician who rehearses more than a few times per month, the economics work out strongly in your favor. The membership also includes recording capability in every room, gym access, cold plunge, and sauna. There's nothing else like it on the Westside. Book a free tour here.

The Broader Pattern

The Downtown Rehearsal closure is not an isolated event. It fits a pattern that's been accelerating for several years: independently-owned rehearsal facilities in LA's core neighborhoods are closing faster than they're being replaced. Rising commercial rents, the economics of hourly music use, and the general decline in affordable industrial space in close-in LA neighborhoods all play a role.

What's replacing them, in the places that are growing, are membership-based facilities and larger multi-room complexes that can spread overhead across more users. Pirate Studios (West Adams, Silver Lake) and The Recording Club (Santa Monica) both operate on this model. The independent hourly room — a single operator with 4–8 rooms running on walk-in bookings — is increasingly hard to sustain economically.

For musicians planning ahead, the practical implication is clear: don't get too attached to any single facility. Know two or three options in your area, understand the pricing models, and have a backup. The LA rehearsal space landscape in 2026 requires more flexibility than it did five years ago.
